Italian police seize 3,500 fake parchments with papal blessings

ROME Italian police have confiscated about three,500 counterfeit parchments bearing blessings by Pope Francis and becoming sold to pilgrims in Rome, authorities mentioned on Monday.

The bogus parchments, with elaborate lettering and pictures of the pope, had been identified in the printing shop of a souvenir retailer near the Vatican, and the proprietor was charged with generating counterfeit goods, a police statement said.

It mentioned the parchments had been printed in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and English and had an all round worth of about 70,000 euros ($ 77,168).

The Vatican’s Apostolic Almonry, or distributor of papal charities, sells authentic parchments bearing words of blessing from the pope. The proceeds go to fund a variety of projects to help the poor and needy of Rome.

They are adorned with elaborate gothic calligraphy and usually include words of excellent wishes and a papal blessing for occasions such as births, weddings and anniversaries. Several are hand-produced.

Last year, the Vatican stopped outsourcing the production of the parchments and returned to the ancient practice of creating them all in-residence. The Vatican stated at the time that this was so all the proceeds would go straight to charities.

Islamic State can make fake Syrian passports: U.S. report

WASHINGTON A U.S. government agency report has warned that Islamic State has the potential to develop fake Syrian passports, a federal official confirmed on Friday.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed the contents of a story by CNN on Friday about the report, but declined to offer a copy of the report.

The report says Islamic State has access to Syrian government passport printing machines and blank passports, raising the possibility the travel documents could be faked, CNN reported, citing a law enforcement supply. (cnn.it/1Rf6lE1)

The CNN supply added that there was also concern that because the militant group had access to biographical and fingerprint information on Syrian citizens, there was also a possibility of identity theft.

ABC News, which initial reported the story on Thursday, stated the report was released to law enforcement by the Homeland Safety Investigations agency last week and raised the possibility that militants could use the documents to travel to the United States. (abcn.ws/1IKPl5I)

“Because far more than 17 months [have] passed given that Raqqa and Deir ez-Zour fell to ISIS, it is attainable that men and women from Syria with passports ‘issued’ in these ISIS-controlled cities or who had passport blanks, may have traveled to the U.S.,” ABC News quoted the report as saying.

State Division spokesman John Kirby, asked at a briefing on Friday about the ABC report, replied: “We have been conscious of reports, not just in the press, that they might have obtained this capability.”

FBI Director James Comey told a Senate committee hearing on Wednesday: “The intelligence community is concerned that they [Islamic State] have the ability, the capability to manufacture fraudulent passports, which is a concern in any setting.”

Chinese government adviser denounces fake living Buddhas: media

BEIJING A senior Chinese government official said fake living Buddhas were using donations to assistance pro-independence activities in Tibet and referred to as on local authorities to take action against them, according to state media.

Neighborhood governments in Tibet must cooperate with their counterparts in eastern and central China and “take joint action to include the phenomenon of fake living Buddhas”, Zhu Weiqun, chairman of the ethnic and religious affairs committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, told state tv on Saturday.

The government is developing a database of legal living Buddhas, and may ultimately make it public, the on-line edition of the official China Youth Everyday on Sunday quoted Zhu as saying.

Tibetan Buddhism holds that the soul of a senior lama, or monk, is reincarnated in the physique of a youngster who would then grow up to grow to be a so-called living Buddha.

As of 2007, there have been more than 100 living Buddhas in Tibet, according to the official China Daily.

The Chinese government has stated it need to approve the subsequent Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 right after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule. He has stated the title of Dalai Lama could finish when he dies.

The search for a living Buddha such as the Dalai Lama is complex, involving divination, interpreting dreams, oracles and prayer, according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

On state television on Saturday, Zhu produced no mention of Baima Aose, a self-proclaimed living Buddha in Hong Kong who came under fire from practitioners right after he ordained Chinese actor Zhang Tielin as a living Buddha as an alternative of by means of the traditional search method.

China’s official Tibet site mentioned a Tibetan monastery has named Baima Aose a “fake”.

Fake living Buddhas swindle income from practitioners in eastern and central China and trick women into possessing sex with them, Zhu said, adding that they then return to Tibet and engage in illegal “splittist activities”.

The Dalai Lama has denied Chinese charges he wants Tibetan independence or that he promotes violence, saying he only desires genuine autonomy for his homeland.
