JERUSALEM — An Israeli border police officer who was filmed beating a Palestinian-American teenager on the edges of a riot in East Jerusalem in July 2014 has been sentenced to 45 days of community service and a suspended prison term of 4 months, Israeli officials said.

State prosecutors had requested a seven-month jail term for the beating, which prompted international outrage when a video recording of it came to light.

The Israeli news media stated that the court handed down the lighter sentence on Wednesday after taking into account the officer’s expression of remorse, his service on behalf of state safety and the difficult circumstances in which he was operating.

The officer, who has not been publicly identified, was charged with assault in September 2014 and was suspended from the force. The video showed him kicking and punching the teenager, Tariq Abu Khdeir, who is from Tampa, Fla.

The Israeli Justice Ministry mentioned that Tariq had not been resisting arrest and that the border police officer had beaten the boy in the head, face and upper body although he was on the ground.

The State Division had named for a quick and credible inquiry following footage of the beating spread worldwide.

Tariq, who was 15 at the time, was spending the summer season with relatives in East Jerusalem when violence broke out over the gruesome killing of his cousin Muhammad Abu Khdeir, 16, by Jewish extremists who said they wanted to avenge the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli youths by Palestinian militants in the West Bank.

The Israeli authorities said that Tariq was masked and holding a wooden slingshot when the officer chased him. Tariq, who mentioned he had only been watching the clashes, was taken to a hospital and returned to the United States about two weeks later.
